Program Planning - Covid-19

EUSA is committed to supporting our partners in running safe and sustainable programs in Europe. We are here to guide and support you as you determine which modality (e.g. in person, virtual, or hybrid) is appropriate for your institution and students – factoring in risk tolerance, adaptability, and budget.

Accelerating vaccination programs in the US and Europe are cause for optimism; however, making optimistic plans also requires preparation for realistic as well as worst case scenarios.

As of March 2021, all of EUSA’s cities are operating under legally enforced restrictions (i.e. lockdown) much more stringent than any in the US. Measures include:

  • only essential workers allowed to work in person

  • closure of non-essential retail

  • restrictions on domestic and international travel

  • quarantine requirements for international travelers (under penalty of imprisonment)

Vaccination status does not exempt any individual from compliance with these measures.

While hopeful that these restrictions will relax in the summer, the proposed timetables by governments are subject to change with little notice.

In practice, this means that in-person programs will require:

  • A quarantine period (anywhere from 1 -2 weeks)

  • Testing as mandated by countries - a cost borne by students (country dependent)

  • Internships that can accommodate remote working and could revert to fully remote

  • Students to bring laptops for remote working

  • No travel outside the program city

  • Stringent student conduct requirements to comply with local regulations

  • A review and assessment of travel and medical insurance coverage and requirements

Our University Relations Team is ready to discuss options for a safe, sustainable international internship experience for your students.
